Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is SES?
A: SES or (Supplemental Educational Services) is a program designed to offer additional educational assistance to students attending designated Program Improvement school sites, in the form of tutoring.
Q: What is Program Improvement?
A: A site designated for Program Improvement is one which has failed to meet their the Federally assigned level of Average Yearly Progress (AYP) for two or more subsequent years in any subgroup of students, in any subject area.
Q: How does SES help my child?
A: Districts are required to set aside 20% of their Federal Title I budget to assist students with tutoring through the hiring of state qualified vendors. SES tutoring is designed to identify and address a student’s academic weak areas; it is not meant for homework help. Of the required funding approximately 15% is set aside for SES and 5% is set aside for School Choice transportation, but these percentages may fluctuate based on the demand for services in each option.
Q: Are there any qualifications?
A: Yes. To qualify for district sponsored tutoring under SES a child must attend a designated PI school.
Q: How do I know if my child qualifies for assistance?
A: Each year the State and Federal government uses the results of state tests to determine student proficiency gains and whether or not a school will be designated as a Program Improvement site. Upon receiving this information the district mails out notifications to parents of the school’s status while making them aware of their options to access SES or School Choice.
Q: What is School Choice?
A: School Choice is another option that parents may consider. This option allows parents to transfer their child to a non-PI site, but by doing so, parents give up the right to receive district funded tutoring under SES.
Q: How do I sign my child up for tutoring?
A: Each year the district sponsors a tutoring vendor fair for parents in the early Fall, usually in September. Parents have a chance to speak with tutoring company representatives and sign up with a vendor that fits their own personnel needs.
Q: Where is the vendor fair held?
A: Vendor fairs are held at school sites, though hosting site may vary. Each event will be advertised through letters to parents, posters and at times, the popular media.
Q: How long do I have to make a choice in tutoring vendors?
A: The district gives a period of two weeks after the vendor fair is held to apply, but this has been extended and even reopened for further student recruitment when needed. The district intents to open a second application period after the first report card period if student application numbers fall below targeted funding levels.
Q: Where does tutoring take place?
A: Tutoring may take place in the home or a specific location specified by the vendor. It may be done one on one or in small groups.
Q: Once I choose a tutoring company for my child when will they start?
A: Starting dates vary depending how quickly the company organizes, but some start as early as December.
Q: If the vendor fair takes place in September, why does it take so long to start the actual tutoring?
A: There are several factors that slow the starting process. The following are just a few examples: student recruitment, arranging a tutoring location, student testing and placement, arranging curriculum, contract approvals by the School Board, recruiting tutoring personnel, finger printing personnel (Meagan’s law) and waiting for the results. You should always obtain a vendors contact information. Your selected tutoring vendor will contact you to make arrangements about time and days of the week tutoring will take place.
Q: What do I do if I have a question or complaint about a tutor or the vendor?
A: You have the option of contacting the vendor directly or you may contact my office at: (661) 792-3081 and speak to: Sandra Espinoza, Director of Categorical Programs & Testing
