Miss Astorga and I were awarded a $3000 grant from Wonderful Company to host McFarland Middle School's Second Annual Reading Fair. With the help of all Language Arts teachers, students are reading a book and creating a tri-fold project board to entice other students to read their book. All projects will be displayed during our Open House set in May. All participants receive a certificate. The top three projects from each grade level receive ribbons. Second place projects will receive a gift basket. The top project from each grade level will receive a $100 gift card from Barnes & Noble! Last year's event produced great projects which showcased the creativity of our students! Make sure to come and support our students during Open House.

We just wrapped up another successful Book Fair. Readers of all ages were able to purchase great books and school supplies. Customers who purchased a book received a raffle ticket for one of six gift baskets filled with books, a college T-shirt, pens, pencils, erasers, ruler, college pennant, and candy. The lucky winners were: Maximina Gregorio Dolores, Octavio Duran, Daniela Romero, Audrey Leon, Ms. Trzaska, and Ashley Gutierrez. Customers who made a purchase of $20 or more received a free copy of the "Maze Runner." In addition, everyone had the opportunity to guess how many jelly beans were in a jar. The winner was Yuliana Cerano Hernandez. We also had a money collection contest between all tenth period classes. Miss Marshall's class collected $55.25 which won them a pizza party. I would like to thank all of my Book Crew members - Eliza Cardenas, Carina Garcia, Noe Gonzalez, Maximina Gregorio Dolores, Reselma Gregorio Dolores, Cristina Hernandez, Karent Hernandez, Anthony Lara, Desiree Rodriguez, and Yvanna Salazar - for their time and hard work.
Guess how many books are in the Library to win a gift basket! Only one guess per person. Person closest without going over actual amount will win! Deadline is October 9.
Students are invited to participate in this year's Dia de Los Muertos Sugar Skull decorating contest! Pick up your blank skulls from the library, decorate, and return by October 23, 2015. Top 3 entries will receive prizes!
Thank you all who supported our Under the Sea Book Fair! With the help of our students and the increase sales in books, we were able to exceed last year's sales by $700!
The 8th period class who collected the most money for All For Books is...Miss Joven's Class. They won an ice cream party!
A special thanks to my Student Book Crew members...We could not have had such a successful Book Fair without your ideas and hard work. Thank you!

Our Book Fair is part of a reading event that brings a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. Some books are as low as $5. Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books will motivate them to read more. And like most acquired skills, the more kids practice reading, the better they’ll get.
Teacher Preview: March 17, after school
Book Fair Dates: March 18 – March 25
*We will also have an online Book Fair, where parents. staff and students can purchase books online at www.scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs 24 hours a day beginning March 13.
